Web  Development: Ben & Jerry’s

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

THE challenge

Building on the success of Ben & Jerry’s ‘Ehe für Alle’ messenger tool, GoDo were engaged for a Web Development project, to broaden the scope of the thinking and create a tool that can be used for multiple NGOs concerned with social or environmental change in Germany.

The tool should enable NGOs to mobilise their activists digitally, enabling them to easily contact their local politician to call for action.

THE outcome

Social Action Tool: A mobile-first, easy to use Web Application, that can be integrated as ‘white-label’ into various organisations’ existing digital infrastructure, enabling them to create campaigns that mobilise their activists to call for Political support. Oh, and it’s free!

But wait..how do you mobilise for Social Action in times of Social distancing??

Lives have changed significantly across the globe due to Corona Virus. At it’s very core, the issue has stopped people gathering – a core component of social demonstration. Corona Virus meant the need for the tool suddenly got greater, both due to its innate ability to create social change whilst maintaining social distance, but due to the real and present danger posed by Corona Virus for those not fortunate enough to have a permanent roof over their head.

The impact of Corona Virus on organisations like #leavenoonebehind2020 and Fridays for Future and their resultant inability to demonstrate, is huge. #leavenoonebehind2020.org had heard about the tool and contacted Ben & Jerry’s to ask for an urgent campaign to raise awareness of the humanitarian crisis in the Moria Camp on Lesbos. The team agreed to mobilise to deliver the Social Action Tool a full two weeks ahead of schedule, and launch a beta campaign.

Our first campaign with #leavenoonebehind2020.org aimed to create awareness for the humanitarian crisis occurring in the Moria refugee camp on Lesbos
Next? Fridays for Future! After that? Maybe you – ’cause if you’re an NGO reading this and want to mobilise for your cause, register on the Social Action Tool today

GoDo Marketing Accelerator @ work: Content

Ok, so not technically digital content, but in the case of a Web Development build from scratch, lots of groundwork ‘content’ was required, namely….

…Technical requirements documents, User Stories and MOSCOW!

Not the coolest of topics, we get it, but we believe in order to achieve a good outcome for the client and an enjoyable project for the people involved, agreeing requirements and getting them right upfront is key. The aim of a technical requirements document, it to outline what the functionality, features and purpose of the asset you are building are. But how do you know what the functionality, features or purpose are? Read on.

Agile Working Methodologies

Complex Web Development builds involving bigger teams work really well using the Scrum Agile Methodology Framework, however in this instance, we just applied some Agile Working Methodologies:

MOSCOW…or rather…

M – Must have

S – Should have

C – Could have

W – Won’t have

This is a really useful technique to help with prioritising and agreeing elements of a build or delivery, but it could easily be applied to bigger Marketing campaigns too. Elements are agreed, and then brought to life with User Stories – read on to find out more.

User Stories

A user story is a tool used in Agile software development to capture a description of a software feature from an end-user perspective. A user story describes the type of user, what they want and why. It’s aim is to create a simplified description of a requirement. Here’s an example we did for the Social Action Tool:

As an NGO, I want to:

Be able to digitally mobilise people that support my organisation by giving them an easy way to contact their politician.

So that I can:

Have a ‘direct-line’ to the politicians that can affect change, and extend the reach of my organisation beyond physical strikes.

GoDo Marketing Accelerator @ work: E…..development!

Not all ‘e’ ends in ‘commerce’. Whether the aim of a digital build is to grow your brand, drive awareness or consideration, drive online sales, or something aimed at creating social change, they all have things in common that make them successful.

Rigour and expertise are required to build something which looks good, is easy and intuitive to use, is adaptable, fit for purpose and achieves the project objective. Good UX, compelling design, stringent attention to detail, thorough testing and excellent project management must all work together in harmony.

The GoDO magic

Being passionate and solution-orientated are qualities any agency worth their salt must have. Here at GoDo we don’t like the words ‘No’, ‘Not possible’ or ‘Too hard’ and we work tirelessly to find solutions for our clients and drive the best outcome for them, with the minimum of budget and fuss.

The real magic of this project was the people. From a dedicated, detail-orientated team of developers, to a solution-orientated team of account managers, designers and testers, all working partially Pro Bono, this was a job were we all had the wonderful opportunity to use our skills and experience for something that made us feel good.

GoDo prides itself on its ability to pivot and adapt quickly to new requirements. This was a core need for this project which evolved and underwent quite significant changes before the release of Version 1.

Technical builds and projects should be fit for purpose and should deliver on the User Stories and requirement sets at the beginning of the project. Is this ideal? Yes. Does it happen like that in the real-world? No. We are humans, and humans change their minds, projects change in priority, budgets change, project deadlines move, and all manner of unprecedented things can happen (Covid-19, anyone?!)

Our job as an agency and your partner is to weather the storm, keep a clear head, and focus on the end goal and project objective.
